Food-borne illnesses
Worried about the risk of food-borne illnesses? With the serious outbreaks in the past few years, it's wise to take precautions and be aware of the foods that are more prone to problems with E. coli, salmonella, norovirus and other contaminants.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a US-based consumer advocacy group in Washington, D.C., created a list of its "top 10 riskiest foods" based on reported cases of illness nationwide from 1990 to 2006. The foods were linked to 1,500 outbreaks, causing nearly 50,000 illnesses. These are just the tip of the iceberg, the center says, as most cases aren't reported and the list doesn't include the more recent ones.

Mercure going into new business?
Heading for Auckland, we were looking for a hotel in the harbour area and while Mercure hotels offering an international standard, we choose the hotel Mercure Windsor Auckland. This was a big mistake!
At check in, we were sent by ourself to a room number the hotel doesn't had...
After we fixed that, we got a room i never saw before - unclean anywhere, broken wardrobe, damaged doors,... and so we told this to the receptionist and went out for dinner, hoping they will fix these problems during this time. We failed!
There was no reaction, even on the second day, the third day and so we left the hotel giving a letter to the Hotel Manager Mr. Rhys Challenger. We will see what will happen in the future...
To us, it seems the Mercure Windsor Auckland is going into a new business and damages the international reputation of Mercure and Accor!

Geht Mercure neue Märkte an?
Auckland stand auf dem Plan und so suchten wir ein gutes Hotel in Hafennähe und entschieden uns aufgrund des internationalen Standard und guten Rufes für das Mercure Windsor Auckland. Das war ein großer Fehler!
Schon beim Check In schickte man uns zu einem nicht vorhandenen Zimmer. Nachdem dies geklärt wurde betraten wir ein Hotelzimmer wie wir es noch nie gesehen hatten - dreckig überall, defekte Türen, kaputter Kleiderschrank..., was wir der Rezeption sofort zutrugen und das Hotel für unser Abendessen verließen, in der Hoffnung man würde diese Zeit nutzen - was nicht geschah!
Auch an den Folgetagen gab es keine Reaktion und so gaben wir bei der Abreise ein kurzes Schreiben an den Hotelmanager, Herr Rhys Challenger, und nun wird sich zeigen was passiert oder nicht passiert.
Es scheint, als ginge das Mercure Windsor Auckland neue Märkte an und schadet damit sicherlich dem internationalen Ruf der Mercure und Accor Hotels.

Aviation hazards from volcanic ash
The grounding of 17,000 flights from the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland highlights the hazard of volcanoes to aircraft. The total closure of British and German airspace is unprecedented. Since 1980 about 5 airports per year have been affected by eruptions. The largest number of closures have occurred at Catania (Sicily), Anchorage (Alaska), Quito (Ecuador), and Tokua (Papua New Guinea). About 20% of the airports closed were more than 500 km from the volcano. Since 1973 there have been at least 100 incidents involving aircraft and volcanic ash emissions. In 1982 an aircraft flying over Galunggung volcano in Indonesia lost power from all four engines, and descended 12,000 ft before the engines were restarted. In 1989 an aircraft flying over Redoubt volcano in Alaska encountered volcanic ash, damaging engines, which required replacing. The current situation in Europe will need to be analysed to determine if the widespread airport closures were an overraction, or justified based on volcanic activity. Caution is always advised when it comes to volcanic activity, but what will be the response next time this type of event occurrs? The last eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano lasted for more than a year, so there is a possibility that more ash emissions will occur.

Auswirkungen von Vulkanasche auf Flugverkehr
Welche Auswirkung Vulkanasche auf den Flugverkehr haben kann, zeigen die gegenwärtig 17.000 gestrichenen Flüge in Europa durch den Ausbruch des Vulkans Eyjafjallajokull in Island. Die vollständige Schließung aller Flughäfen in England und Deutschland sind beispiellos. Seit 1980 gab es jährlich weltweit etwa 5 Flughafenschließungen infolge von Vulkanaktivitäten. Davon betroffen waren meist Catania (Sizilien), Anchorage (Alaska), Quito (Ecuador) und Tokua (Papua New Guinea). Seit 1973 wurden weltweit knapp 100 Notfallsituationen an Bord von Flugzeugen gemeldet, welche in einem Zusammenhang mit vulkanischer Asche standen. 1982 durchflog eine Besatzung den Ascheausstoß des Vulkans Galunggung, wobei alle 4 Triebwerke ausfielen. Die Maschine sank bis auf eine Höhe von 12.000 ft, ehe die Triebwerke wieder gestartet werden konnten. Bei dem Überflug des Vulkans Redoubt in Alaska im Jahre 1989 beschädigte vulkanische Asche die Triebwerke eines Flugzeuges dermaßen, dass die Triebwerke vollständig ausgetauscht werden mussten. Die gegenwärtige Situation in Europa muss angemessen analysiert werden, um zu beurteilen, ob die Sperrungen des Luftverkehrs im erfolgten Umfang angemessen waren und sind. Der Vulkan in Island bleibt zudem sicher erst mal weiterhin aktiv.

Business-Story: Indo-German Cultural Clash
A young Indonesian man accepted the promise a German start-up offered and he lost his active life. First he had to lie to old friends, he was forced to deceive old partners and after some month he got a stroke.
How could this happen? The German start-up, a project building up a global network in high quality medical care, knew about the situation and backgroud of this young father years before they started destroying the life of the family with two kids.

Wie konnte das passieren? Das deutsche Start-Up ist ein Projekt zur Verbesserung der medizinischen Behandlung weltweit und wußte seit langem um die Situation des jungen Familienvaters. Dennoch übte man so viel Druck auf ihn aus, dass nun das Leben der jungen Familie zerstört ist.

Handover of the 1st Global Hospital Award
Last year, we asked the reader's of our journal The TravelMedicus, visitors of the associated websites, clients and colleagues from around the globe, helping us finding the first winner of our new Global Hospital Award. At the end of the year 2009, we had four favorites for the first annual Global Hospital Award: a hospital in Singapore, a small hospital in the eastern part of Indonesia, a hospital in South Africa and one hospital in Thailand. In January 2010 the decision was made and the first winner of our Global Hospital Award was the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Bangkok, Thailand. Hours after the decision was made, the CEO of the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center, Dr. Chatree Duangnet sent a message about his joy and gratitude. Looking for the right place for a handover ceremony, we thought about the ITB Berlin 2010, the world's leading travel trade show. Bangkok Airways offered their space at the exhibition and german TV ARD wanted to take part. Saturday, March 13th 2010 at 12:00 noon, the handover ceremony started in front of the ARD camera in hall 26. The first annual Global Hospital Award was handed out to Mr. R. Krewer, the Marketing Manager of the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center. We congratulate the whole team of the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center and want to say thanks to all the people from around the globe for voting for the Global Hospital Award.

Im vergangenen Jahr riefen wir erstmals unsere Leser des Journals The TravelMedicus, Gäste, Klienten und Kollegen weltweit auf, uns bei der Suche nach dem besten Krankenhaus des Jahres zu helfen. Ende 2009 waren es dann vier Favoriten für den 1st Annual Global Hospital Award: eine Klinik in Singapore, ein kleines Krankenhaus in Ostindonesien, eine Klinik in Südafrika und ein Haus in Thailand. Im Januar stand der Gewinner des ersten Global Hospital Award fest - das Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Bangkok/Thailand. Noch in der Nacht der Bekanntgabe des Gewinners reagierte der Klinikleiter in Bangkok und brachte seine Freude über den Gewinn zum Ausdruck. Ein würdiger Rahmen für die öffentliche Übergabe des Awards fand sich auch schnell, die ITB 2010 in Berlin. Bangkok Airways stellte seinen Messestand zur Verfügung und ein deutscher TV-Sender kündigte sich an. Am Samstag, den 13.03.2010 um 12:00 Uhr war es dann soweit und der Global Hospital Award des Journals The TravelMedicus wurde vor laufender Kamera der ARD an das Bangkok Hospital Medical Center übergeben. Wir gratulieren dem Team des Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Bangkok und danken den vielen Teilnehmern, welche die Kliniken weltweit vorgeschlagen haben und die letztendlich das Bangkok Hospital zum Sieger des ersten Global Hospital Award gekürt haben.

March 2nd - 6th 2010 mediScon presented their up to date of "DocQuery - a travel medicine information system" at the CeBIT in Hanover. The theme of the CeBIT 2010 was "Connecting Worlds" and medicalQM, a service provided by mediScon worldwide, was also an interesting theme, people listened to and discussed about on Saturday, March 6th.
Visitors at the CeBIT showed a great interest in the first Global Hospital Award Winner 2010 and the backgrounds of the award, won by the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Bangkok, Thailand.

Vom 2. bis 6. März präsentierte mediScon sein Projekt "DocQuery - ein reisemedizinisches Wissenssystem" auf der CeBit. Das Thema der CeBIT 2010 lautete "Connecting Worlds" und daher war auch das Thema "medicalQM, Ethik und Transparenz im globalisierenden Gesundheitsmarkt" ein interessiert beobachtetes Thema am Samstag, den 6.März.
Die Besucher der CeBIT zeigten ein großes Interesse am ersten Global Hospital Award Winner 2010 und an den Hintergründen des Awards, der dem Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Thailand zugesprochen wurde.

Knowledge goes Iraq
Years ago, disaster management was simply left to a few dedicated professionals. Roles were clear: rescue workers rushed to help victims and certain agencies stepped in to provide temporary shelter and food. And society at large, a while after the impact, erased the disaster from it`s memory – until the next one came to wreak new destruction.

Unfortunately, disaters throughout the world have provided ample opportunities to test policies and recommendations set out years ago. Over time, the approach has changed.

Today, the management of humanitarian assistance involves many more and different players, and disasters are recognized as public health priorities in which the health system plays a significant role. Today, prevention, mitigation, and preparedness are part of the vocabulary of disaster administrators in national and international organizations and, more importantly, they are used to advance the cause of disaster reduction. Today, society‘s involvement in disasters both precedes the impact and remains alive long after. Finally, the interrelationship between human development and disasters is better understood today – how disasters can permanently damage a country’s economy, but, at the same time, how the path toward development may put a country at greater risk to the destructive consequences of natural disasters.

We are pleased to offer these new guidelines to the people of Iraq. The new guidelines include the pinciples and recommandations that have withstood the test of time and new concepts and understanding gleaned along the way. May they strengthen disaster prevention, mitigation, and preparedness in your country and also around the globe. May they save lifes.

Wissenstransfer in den Irak
Bis vor Jahren war das Thema "Disaster Management" nur ein paar auserwählten Spezialisten vorbehalten. Die Aufgaben waren klar definiert: Rettungskräfte eilen an den Ort des Geschehens und helfen den Opfern und einige Organisationen bieten Notunterkünfte und Essen. Die Gesellschaft nimmt das Geschehen war, akzeptiert es bis zum Zeitpunkt eines neuen Unglücks.

Diese Geschehnisse der Vergangenheit haben unsere Gesellschaft geprägt und bestehende Systeme wiederholt auf die Probe gestellt. Daher haben sich die Aufgaben geändert und neu angepasst.

Heute beinhaltet das Disaster Management weitaus mehr als nur einfache Hilfe und Anteilnahme, denn es betrifft ein jedes regionales Gesundheitssystem und vor Allem auch die regional betroffene Wirtschaft in einem globalen Aspekt. Nationale und internationale Interessen sind beeinträchtigt und müssen berücksichtigt werden. Dies stärkt jede einzelne betroffene Person vor Ort. Heute sind diese Themen globaler geworden und sie werden auch globaler gehändelt, schließlich betrifft es mehr Menschen, als nur diejenigen in der betroffenen Region. Wir haben es endlich verstanden, wie eine einzelne Person mit einem globalen System zusammen hängt. Naturkatastrophen haben einen bedeutsamen Faktor auf nicht nur regionale Wirtschaftssysteme, vielmehr auch auf das globale Wirtschaftssystem in Bezug auf jede einzeln betroffene Person!

Wir sind uns der Verantwortung sehr bewußt und freuen uns über die Einladung zur Unterstützung und zum Aufbau eines angemessenen Systems im Irak. Hoffen wir, das unser Wissen vor Ort auch nur ein Leben mehr retten mag!

Yesterday, a project meeting of medicalQM and the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center was held in Cologne/Germany.
Dr. Chatree Duangnet, CEO of the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center and Thomas Schmidt, CEO mediScon worldwide and Chief Editor of The TravelMedicus talked about further steps to ensure best medical treatment and patient safety in the growing medical tourism sector. Another theme was the new part of the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center in Thailand, the coming Brain Center. Together with the marketing team of the Bangkok Hospital Medical Center, including Ralf Krewer, the international Marketing Manager of the BMC, the cooperation between medicalQM and the Bangkok Hopsital Group was intensified.

Gerstern trafen sich Dr. Chatree Duangnet, CEO des Bangkok Hospital Medical Center und Thomas Schmidt, CEO mediScon worldwide und Herausgeber des Journals Der TravelMedicus zu einem Projekt-Meeting in Köln. Thema war die Vertiefung der bestehenden Kooperation zwischen medicalQM und der Klinikgruppe zur weiteren Sicherstellung und Verbesserung der Qualität medizinischer Behandlungen und Patientensicherheit im internationalen Medizintourismus. Es wurde über das neue Hirn-Zentrum der Bangkok Hospital Gruppe gesprochen, welches als neuer Klinikbereich gegenwärtig in Bangkok entsteht. Zusammen mit Herrn Ralf Krewer, Marketingleiter des BMC, wurden die nächsten Schritte der Projektzusammenarbeit abgestimmt.

In the last five month, a new curriculum "Travel Medicine & Tourism Medicine" focusing on quality and safety for traveler and staff in maritime tourism, i.e. tourism on, in, and by the sea was created.
